b Nuneham Courtenay, nr Abingdon, Oxon 1835, d Wimbledon, Surrey 1910. Winchester Coll and Exeter Coll Oxford, where he was already composing music; worked as a civil engineer and was employed for many years on railways in India. Encouraged by J B Dykes (qv) he took a music degree in his thirties; BMus (Oxford). 17 of his tunes appear in Worship Song, ed Garrett Horder 1898 and 1905. (Not connected with H W Baker, 1821–77.)
