b Warren, Mass, USA 1832, d Highwood, NJ 1918. Educated at Elmira Academy, he co-edited Sunday School songbooks under the name ‘Karl Reden’, in association with William Bradbury and Ira Sankey. Turning to classical music, he studied at the Leipzig Conservatory and became a friend of Franz Liszt and Louis Spohr; in 1859 he returned to the USA to study law at Albany Univ. He established a legal practice in Erie, PA, and remained active as an author and composer. He wrote string quartets, cantatas, chorales, hymn tunes and other music under various pseudonyms, and also studied philology and philosophy. No.614.
