b Mansfield, Notts 1877, d Bournemouth, Hants 1949. Derby Sch; chorister at King’s Coll Cambridge 1888–93; and St John’s Coll Cambridge. Assistant master at Uppingham Sch, Rutland, where he taught Henry G Ley qv; then from 1911 and for the next 38 years he was Director of Music at Gresham’s Sch, Holt, Norfolk, where among his pupils was Benjamin Britten.
