b Rothenbach, Germany 1654, d Eisleben, Germany 1681. After his education at the St Lorenz Sch, Nüremburg, he went on to study theology and philosophy at Âltdorf and Jena. He became pastor of St Andrew’s Ch in Eisleben 1680, and rector of its Gymnasium, but a year later died of the plague at the age of 27. His one enduring and distinctive tune has become almost inseparable from its English text of 2 centuries later. No.390.
