Davies, Henry Walford
Composer
b Oswestry, Shropshire 1869, d Wrington, Somerset 1941. Chorister at St George’s Chapel Windsor, where he was later organist; scholar of RCM; organist in London notably at the Temple Church, 1898–1923. He was Conductor of the Bach Choir; Prof at the RCM, Prof of Music, Aberystwyth; and Master of the King’s Musick. First recognised as a composer with his 1904 oratorio Everyman, he was an author, popular broadcaster and editor; knighted in 1922. Among his books is Music and Worship (1935) co-authored with Harvey Grace and focused on the Anglican parish church. Nos.9, 345(ii), 383, 839.
