b Lüneburg, nr Hamburg, N Germany 1637, d Stettin (Szczecin), S Poland 1676. St Johannis’ Gymnasium, Lüneburg; Univ of Helmstedt (Theology). In 1662 he succeeded J Crüger (qv) as Cantor at St Nicholas’ Cathedral, Berlin, and as Director of its College of Music. 6 years later he moved to Stettin as Prof of Music at the Coll of St Charles, where he remained until his death at the age of 39; he also taught Gk and poetry. Most of his compositions were intended for domestic rather than congregational use. Among his writings was a work on his older contemporary Paul Gerhardt, whose hymns he collected together for the first time. No.349.
