b Cambridge 1899, d Heacham, nr Hunstanton, Norfolk 1973. Winchester Coll and Pembroke Coll Cambridge (MA). Active in the war 1917–18 where he lost a leg; he then studied composition at the RCM under Vaughan Williams and conducting under Adrian Boult and Malcolm Sargent, taught there from 1925 to 1962, having been appointed as Fellow and Lecturer. From 1946–62 he was also Prof of Music at Cambridge, and Precentor at Gonville and Caius Coll. His relatively small music output included songs, choral and large-scale orchestral works, chamber music and one symphonic ballad. He took part in many festivals, finally retiring to Heacham.
