Composer

b Exeter, Devon 1836, d Bradfield, Essex 1883. Eton College and Queen’s Coll Oxford where he became precentor (1860–66) and in 1863 was Coryphaeus (chorus conductor) to the Univ and its public music examiner, having gained his DMus in 1860. He was ordained in 1861 to a curacy in Oxford, co-editing The Merton Tune Book in 1863; after posts in Helston, Cornwall, and back at Eton where as organist and succentor he built a large 5-manual instrument, he succeeded his father as incumbent of two adjoining parishes near Harwich, Essex. His Eton organ was then divided between the two churches. His booklet Hints on the Purchase of an Organ appeared in 1867. Some of his tunes featured in Hymns of Consecration and Faith; the 3 included here also appear in several other evangelical books. Nos.37, 513, 902.
