b Llanberis, Caernarvonshire 1849, d Rhiwdollion, Caernarvonshire 1919. Showing early musical talent, he assisted his precentor-father at their home chapel, then John Roberts at Capel Coch. Taught at Dolbadarn, Aberystwyth, and then as Primary School Headmaster at Betws-y-Coed, forming music classes and teaching Sol-Fa in his NW Wales neighbourhood, to which he travelled many miles on foot. He conducted and adjudicated at singing festivals; LLEF is his best-known tune, often set in Wales to ‘When I survey’. He may have been the first to introduce a musical instrument into the local Methodist chapels. No.22.
