b Ilkeston, Derbys 1759, d Nottingham 1830. After his youth spent in Ilkeston he became a stocking manufacturer in Nottingham. His spare time was devoted to music, both conducting the local choir and teaching. Later he moved to London, changed trades and opened a music shop in Houndsditch nr Aldgate. He wrote several hymn tunes, one of which has proved enduring in limited circles (though its name is shared with at least one other). No.781.
