Playford’s Psalms (1671)
Composer
John Playford (1623–c1686/87), a music bookseller and Vicar-choral of St Paul’s Cathedral, compiled and published Psalms and Hymns in Solemn Musick of Four Parts…(etc), one of a rich series of Anglo-Genevan Psalters of the 16th-17th cents. The successful tune included here and in many other hymnals, originally from the 1635 Scottish Psalter, was adapted, arranged and named by him; see also the account in Grove. No.256.
