b Frome (or Charlton nr Yeovil?), Som 1843, d Australia 1916. While a choirboy at Wells Cathedral in Somerset, one of his responsibilities was to make copies of the anthems and other service music—a frequently overlooked task seen from our later perspective of multi-copying technology. He went on to learn to play the organ, studying in London under H J Gauntlett and Sterndale Bennett, being awarded the Lambeth DMus for his achievements. He held appointments successively at Bradfield Coll (public sch), Weston-super-Mare Parish Ch and St Peter’s Notting Hill, London. After emigrating permanently to Melbourne he continued as organist in several churches, and became a Govt Inspector for Public Schools in the state of Victoria. No.413=755.
