b Mayfair C London 1827, d Surbiton, Surrey 1867. Winchester Coll and Trinity Coll Cambridge; ordained 1852, and soon afterwards appointed as Vicar of Barrington, nr Great Shelford, Cambs, where he remained for 15 years until his early death. In his twenties (1853) he published Ancient Jerusalem: Psalms and Hymns, with 46 texts set to his own tunes. He was a keen supporter of the SPCK, wrote a fresh translation of the Song of Songs, and contributed to Smith’s Dictionary of the Bible and to The Speaker’s Commentary.
