b Sutton, nr Macclesfield, Ches 1857, d Brighton, Sussex 1910. Studying at the RCM, he moved from a Congregational ch upbringing to the form of Anglicanism which attracted him at Westminster Abbey. After being organist at parish churches in St Leonards-on-Sea and Cheltenham he became a Roman Catholic, and took an appointment at Brighton’s RC Ch of the Sacred Heart.
