b Houghton-le-Spring, Co Durham 1852, d Monte Carlo 1934. Son of the organist-composer of the same name. A Durham Cathedral chorister, at 16 he became organist at Monkwearmouth Parish Church. He studied at Leipzig 1876–78, BMus 1878 (Oxford), DMus 1885. Subsequently serving as organist at Tavistock and Hampstead, he travelled to S Africa and Australia as examiner for Trinity Coll London. He was Music Ed for The Hymnal Companion to the Book of Common Prayer, 1890; joint founder of journal The Organist and Choirmaster, 1893; and composer of much sacred and secular music including the oratorio Ruth.
