As we open up your word today

As we open up your word today,
give us ears for what you have to say,
for your Spirit’s help we humbly pray;
speak to us, Lord.
Gladly now we come to learn from you,
wholly trusting that your word is true—
ancient message, yet for ever new—
speak to us, Lord.

Come, Lord Jesus, by your Spirit,
hear us as we pray.
For our growth and for your glory
speak to us today.

2. Make us conscious of your presence here,
as we listen may your voice be clear;
move our hearts to serve with holy fear:
speak to us, Lord.
When we leave to face another day,
may your living word still guide our way,
ruling over all we do and say:
speak to us, Lord.

Come, Lord Jesus…

The story behind the hymn

‘As we open up your word today’ was composed in 2012 and came as a result of listening to a sermon on the importance of God speaking to us through his word. Perhaps the key phrase is ‘For our growth and for your glory, speak to us today’.
