Tune

The story behind the hymn

A new section devoted to the providence of God opens with a further short song, this time dating back to 1979. The text is a simple arrangement, with repetition, of Deuteronomy 32:3–4, closest to RSV and NIV translations. This is a fragment of the first ‘Song of Moses’ in Scripture, which opens with a challenge to heaven and earth to listen and bear witness, and soon moves into sermon mode addressed to the pilgrim people of Israel on the edge of the promised land. Like 252 it moved from the popular Spring Harvest repertoire into MP (from 1983) and other books. Text and tune are the joint work of two Marys, Mary Kirkbride Barthow and Mary Lou King. 261 is a quite different composition arising from the same Scripture. The music, ASCRIBE GREATNESS, is integral to the text.
