Baptized in water for our Lord,
we follow and obey his word.
In him we die, in him we rise
to reign with him beyond the skies.
2. Baptized into the triune name,
the Father’s promises we claim;
forgiveness through Christ’s blood alone
and access to the heavenly throne.
3. Baptized in Christ and with him one,
a transformed life is here begun;
now dead to sins we used to love,
our minds are set on things above.
4. Baptized, filled with the Spirit’s power;
his presence with us hour by hour;
to demonstrate through our new birth
God’s living presence on this earth.
5. Baptized to show what God has done
by saving sinners through his Son;
in him we die, in him we rise
to reign with him beyond the skies.

The story behind the hymn
During the preparation of Praise! it became clear that more hymns on baptism were needed, not least written by baptists. Paul Sayer was then a member of the editorial group and of Hook Evangelical Church in Surbiton, Surrey, where it often met; he offered this text, written in 1998 at his home in nearby Hersham, which happily opens this new section 6f. It clearly expresses the baptist view of this gospel ordinance or sacrament, drawing on several NT passages. Sung in 1999, it is published here for the first time. Together with 605 it is the author’s first venture into hymnwriting, and is also included in the 2004 edn of CH.
