Blessed are those who fear the Lord,
walking in God’s perfect ways:
all they do shall bring reward;
love enriches all their days.
2. Blessings greet the husband, wife,
parents, children, old and young;
fruits of faith be theirs for life,
joy in songs together sung.
3. Bless us, Lord! Your kingdom come:
children’s children shouting praise,
prayer in nation, church and home,
peace in Christ to crown our days.

The story behind the hymn
Like the 1st Psalm and the 32nd, this one begins with a beatitude; it goes on to specify some of the blessings of family life. It was the first of two approaches by Christopher Idle, both of which appeared in The Wedding Book in 1989. But this was drafted at Limehouse 8 years earlier, as part of the work of providing suitable versions for Family Services where Psalm Praise had not managed to. Some have problems today with such words as ‘husband’ and ‘wife’; others, like the author, find them all the more vital to retain in use as Scripture does. The (happily) shouting children are partly borrowed from the triumphal entry (‘Palm Sunday’, Matthew 21), and another Christian gloss is the use of love, joy and peace (cf Galatians 5) in the last line of each stz. Evelyn Abbott’s tune BRAEMAR is first used here with these words; it is named from the Scottish town in the Grampian mountains W of Aberdeen. INNOCENTS or CULBACH are other possibilities.
