Blessing and honour, glory and power
be unto the Ancient of Days;
from every nation, all of creation
bow before the Ancient of Days.

Every tongue in heaven and earth
shall declare your glory,
every knee shall bow at your throne
in worship;
you will be exalted, O God,
and your kingdom shall not pass away,
O Ancient of Days.

2. Your kingdom shall reign over all the earth:
sing unto the Ancient of Days.
For none shall compare to your matchless worth:
sing unto the Ancient of Days.

Tune

The story behind the hymn

In this song Gary Sadler and Jamie Harvill blend some of the expressions from Daniel 7 and Philippians 2 with those of Revelation 4. It needs to be distinguished from several others beginning with similar or identical words. A strikingly different approach to the prophet’s verses is found in William C Doane’s Ancient of days, who sittest throned in glory, but that Trinitarian hymn from 1886 has not been included in British hymnals. The music named from its opening line, BLESSING AND HONOUR, GLORY AND POWER, was composed by the joint authors. It was published first in 1992 and has appeared in ‘Spring Harvest’ collections and (in 1999) Sing Glory and Complete Mission Praise.
