God is great, amazing!
Come, let his praises ring.
God is great, astounding!
The whole creation sings.

1. His clothing is splendour and majesty bright,
for he wraps himself in a garment of light.
He spreads out the heavens, his palace of stars
and rides on the wings of the wind.

2. What marvellous wisdom the Maker displays,
the sea vast and spacious, the dolphins and whales.
The earth full of creatures, the great and the small,
he watches and cares for them all.

3. The rain forest canopies darken the skies,
cathedrals of mist that resound with the choirs
of creatures discordant, outrageous, ablaze
in colourful pageants of praise.

4. Above his creation the Father presides,
the pulse of the planets, the rhythm of tides.
The moon marks the seasons, the day follows night,
yet he knows every beat of my heart.

5. Let cannons of thunder salute their acclaim,
the sunsets fly glorious banners of flame,
the angels shout ‘holy’ again and again
as they soar in the arch of the heavens.

The story behind the hymn

In this recent text Graham Kendrick and Steve Thompson have joined forces to produce a contemporary celebration of God the Creator whose power is seen in what he has made. It can be regarded as an impressionist treatment of Psalm 104, topped out with phrases borrowed from other writers; dolphins, whales and rain forests have been special concerns of this generation, while cathedrals (stz 3) feature only here in the present book— metaphorically but still ironically. The first author/composer has more recently expressed his appreciation of (stone) cathedrals while performing in some of them, and Steve Biddulph wrote in his 1994 book Manhood that ‘Man’s cathedrals only mimic the arches and dappled sunshine of the forest’. This composition reached MP in 1996 after outings at Spring Harvest from 1993 onwards. It echoes parts of Job and the Psalms, and enlarges on Romans 1:20. The tune GOD IS GREAT is also the joint work of the authors of the text.
