God of glory, we exalt your name,
you who reign in majesty;
we lift our hearts to you
and we will worship, praise and magnify
your holy name.

In power resplendent
you reign in glory,
eternal King, you reign for ever.
Your word is mighty,
releasing captives;
your love is gracious,
you are my God.

Tune

The story behind the hymn

This further song from David Fellingham in 1982 (cf 242) was prompted by several scriptural expressions of praise. The author says that he especially appreciated the picture in Philippians 2 of Christ’s humiliation and subsequent exaltation; his text ‘was intended to encourage in Christians in every generation … an attitude of Christ-like humility in worship’. He also wished to give full value (as in Scripture) to the key words ‘exalt’ and ‘name’, together signifying Christ’s divinity. The song appeared in early Spring Harvest collections, and in 1987 in both Songs and Hymns of Fellowship and MP. David Peacock’s arrangement of the author’s tune GOD OF GLORY, as printed here, was also widely used in the 1980s and 90s.

A look at the author

Fellingham, David (Dave)

b Horsham, Sussex 1945. His Salvationist family settled in Tongham near Aldershot, where he responded to the gospel as a child, finding that faith and music mixed easily. He attended George Abbot Sch for Boys, Guildford, and after a year’s library work trained as a teacher at Sussex Univ, graduating 1968; also ARCM, majoring in the trumpet. He briefly taught music at Newhaven Tideway Sch, and then was Director of Music at Longhill Sch. In 1976 he became a lay pastor in an Anglican Church, and 3 years later joined the leadership team at the Church of Christ the King, Brighton, Sussex. He ministers there primarily as an evangelist but also as crisis-counsellor, outreach organiser and song/music leader. As an author/composer and musician he has had several classical works performed, his music has often featured at annual Spring Harvest events, notably in the 1990s, he leads the singing at many united gatherings within the renewal movement, and he trains others in music and worship. He has 4 compositions in Let’s Praise (1988) and 8 in the 1997 edn of MP. His work has reached wider circles through Mission Praise, and he has ministered in Europe, N America and the Far East.
