God of my life, to you I pray;
Spirit of life, fill me today;
Christ be my life, my truth, my way:
glory to God, my God!
2. God of my strength when I am weak,
prize and reward of all who seek;
open my mouth, that I may speak
glory to God, my God!
3. God of my joy, be my delight;
music by day and songs at night;
lead me to walk as in your sight,
glory to God, my God!

The story behind the hymn
This shorter text continuing the Trinitarian section has origins in The Book of Common Prayer and in John Barnard’s tune. It was written at Oakley, Suffolk, in April 1995 by Christopher Idle, who built the words around 3 phrases in Coverdale’s version of Psalms 42 and 43: ‘God of my life … God of my strength … God of my joy’. They were published in Light upon the River in 1998. The opening phrase is a popular one; Julian has significant entries for 6 hymns starting with these same 4 words, including two each from Wesley and Doddridge (see also 876).
John Barnard’s LITTLE STANMORE proved the ideal partner to Timothy Dudley-Smith’s Spirit of faith, by faith be mine (1985), when they were published together in Worship Songs Ancient and Modern in 1992. But some, including Christopher Hayward, felt that the tune (not the text) cried out for a 3rd stz; hence the matching of words and music as intended by the author and seen here in print for the first time. The name is that of a neighbourhood near the composer’s home in Middx.
