He is exalted,
the King is exalted on high.
I will praise him.
He is exalted,
for ever exalted
and I will praise his name!

He is the Lord,
for ever his truth shall reign.
Heaven and earth
rejoice in his holy name.
He is exalted,
the King is exalted on high.

Tune

The story behind the hymn

This song from America was composed in Springdale, Arkansas in 1985 by Twila Paris while still in her 20s. Like others in this section of the book she finds inspiration in the book of Psalms. Here, Psalm 47 prompted the words, and the music HE IS EXALTED was written to match them. The composer wrote, ‘Using David as our example, I hope and pray that my music will inspire worship in your spirit, lighten your heart and minister peace’. Her song became popular in Britain through Spring Harvest and the 1990 MP, and is the one which first made her name known here. Let’s Praise 2 (1994) headed it ‘Triumphant’ and gave Psalm 99 as the source. Fuller versions of both Psalms are found at 47 and 99.

A look at the author

Paris, Twila

b ?USA 1958; a singer from early years, encouraged by her pastor-father she recorded a song album at the age of 4. When aged 7, her family moved to Springdale, Arkansas; she found the move difficult but found joy in the music her father taught her at the piano. She studied computer-programming at high school, but switched to a ‘chorus’ class and on graduation joined YWAM, touring and training with a music and drama team. In response to demand she then began recording professional albums, the first being ‘Knowin’ You’re Around’ in 1981; she has since received many awards for subsequent songs and recordings. After 15 years of marriage to Jack Wright she at last conceived, shortly before touring with the long-planned Christmas musical ‘Child of the Promise’ in which she took the role of Elizabeth. No.485.
