He rescued me from the darkest night
and brought me into his glorious light.
To know his presence is my delight.
Hallelujah, he rescued me.
1. A joy that keeps overflowing-
A peace words cannot express.
My sin and guilt are washed away,
I share his righteousness.
2. The Father’s arms are around me-
the Spirit’s fulness within.
No condemnation now I fear,
I rest secure in him.
3. To Jesus Christ be the glory-
almighty Saviour and friend.
The love that bought me with his blood
will keep me to the end.

He rescued me Metre: - 87 86 with chorus 99 98
Composer: - Baker, Geoff
The story behind the hymn
Geoff Baker’s song illustrates another use of exuberant language, in a different dimension from the previous item but delighting in the same truth of Romans 8:1. With his own tune HE RESCUED ME, the words were written in 1995 and were heard at the annual Spring Harvest at least in 1998–99. In the SH books the music is headed ‘Country rock style’, and the song was recorded on the 1998 SH album. It appears here for the first time in a hymnal.
