His hands were pierced, the hands that made
the mountain range and forest glade,
that washed the stains of sin away
and changed earth’s darkness into day.
2. His feet were pierced, the feet that trod
the furthest shining star of God,
and left their imprint deep and clear
on every winding pathway here.
3. His heart was pierced, the heart that burned
to comfort every heart that yearned;
and from it came a cleansing flood,
the river of redeeming blood.
4. His hands and feet and heart, all three
were pierced for me on Calvary;
and here and now, to him I bring
my hands, feet, heart, an offering.

His Hands Were Pierced Metre: - LM (Long Metre: 88 88)
Composer: - Allen, Cecil John
The story behind the hymn
As with 423, this song by D Wood became known in Britain through CSSM/Scripture Union Choruses. Except for a few of the Bible texts set to music, this is the only item to appear twice in the complete collection, because of a later tune. In Bk 1 (1921) it is headed ‘The Wounds of Christ’, said to be from The Victorious Christ, and permission acknowledged as from ‘Rev D Wood’. To this tune it also appeared in Youth Praise (1966) and MP (1983, where it is credited to Douglas Woods); in GH it was named WOUNDS OF JESUS, set to other words and ascribed to David Wood. CSSM Bk 2 (1938) repeated the text, set this time to Cecil J Allen’s tune with acknowledgements to the composer, who was ‘M.Inst.T, FRSA’. It now appears also in the 2004 edn of CH, credited to ‘D Wood, b1913’. The tune is now known as HIS HANDS WERE PIERCED and used here in Pandina Lam’s new arrangement.
The original word ‘everglade’ at the end of line 2, changed here to ‘forest glade’, suggests a N American source. The pattern of ‘hands, feet, heart’ is similar to the ‘head, hands, feet, heart’ of H E Hardy’s text from 1918, O dearest Lord, thy sacred head, another 4-stz hymn in LM about the cross and our own response. Cf also 453 stz 3.
