Tune

The story behind the hymn

While this song arose in similar circles to those of 174, with roots in Isaiah 6 and Revelation 4, this time the writer/composer is unknown. The music HOLY, HOLY, HOLY IS THE LORD is arranged by Norman Warren, in a version published in Jesus Praise (1982), Church Family Worship (1988) and several other books. Other stzs are sometimes supplied, such as ‘Jesus … is the Lord’, ‘Glory … to the Lord’; because many similar songs are in print, care must be taken not to confuse them. This stz has recently been incorporated into the ‘Eucharistic [Thanksgiving] Prayer’ in some churches using a printed liturgy for Communion, where it is sung by the congregation to this tune. It has thus become a semi-official part of the latest Church of England alternative services (in Common Worship, 2000), either as printed here or in a form closer to the authorised text.
