Holy, holy, Lord God almighty,
who was and who is and is to come.
Holy, holy, Lord God almighty,
who was and who is and is to come.
All the angels cry, ‘Holy’,
all the angels cry, ‘Holy’,
all the angels cry, ‘Holy is your name’.
Holy is your name. Holy is your name.
Holy is your name. Holy is your name.

Tune

The story behind the hymn

This simple song making a single point is based on Revelation 4:8 which itself echoes Isaiah 6:3. Like 170 and 179, it has an opening line which has been much used in nearly-identical ways; cf 175. Strictly speaking, the cry of ‘holy’ is uttered in Isaiah by the seraphim and in Revelation by the 4 living creatures; like other and older texts, this one uses the word ‘angels’ in an inclusive or extended sense. Richard Lewis’s text, with its probably inseparable tune HOLY, HOLY, LORD GOD ALMIGHTY, was written some time before 1997.
