The story behind the hymn

In this song, published in 1977, Brent Chambers has set the final 3 vv of Psalm 57 (9–11 in the 1952 Revised Standard Version, with small repeats) to his own music. The words reappear in Psalm 108:3–5; see 57 and 108 in Praise! They were included in the 1st (and therefore each subsequent) edition of MP, and in other books since then; but the first line varies between ‘thee’ and ‘you’, and ‘people’ and ‘peoples’. Unlike the AV, the RSV has ‘peoples’; Songs from the Psalms (1990) seems to have been the first to modernise the pronouns throughout. The author’s tune is now named I WILL GIVE THANKS, so that at least this title avoids any verbal variations.

Chambers, Brent

b Napier, New Zealand 1948. Educated at Colonso High Sch, Napier; converted at 18, and studied at the Bible College of New Zealand. He has been an author/composer of Scripture songs from the 1970s, who describes himself as ‘mad on music’ from his earliest years, and as ‘a full-time songwriter who repaints houses for a living’. He travels as a worship leader with David and Dale Garrett. 3 of his Bible-based compositions were included in Let’s Praise in 1988; one of them (‘In the presence of your people’) appears in some 10 other collections, and another here as in CH (2004). No.183.
