Jesus, Lamb of God:
have mercy on us.
Jesus, Lamb of God:
have mercy on us.
For you alone are the Holy One,
you alone are the Most High.
Jesus, Lamb of God:
have mercy, mercy on us.
2. Jesus, bearer of our sins:
have mercy on us.
Jesus, bearer of our sins:

Tune
-
Jesus, Lamb of God Metre: - Irregular
Composer: - Mayhew, Brian John
The story behind the hymn
Brian Mayhew wrote the words and music of this composition at his home in Surbiton, Surrey, in 1994. As with his other items in Praise!, the tune came first, but these words were suggested by and based on traditional texts from the Church of England’s Alternative Service Book of 1980. They link the acclamation of Jesus by John the Baptist as ‘the Lamb of God …’ (John 1:29,34) with part of the Gloria in Excelsis which has always been included in CofE Communion services; see also 176. This version omits the opening praise and thanksgiving which give the Gloria its special character, concentrating rather on the prayers for mercy and peace. It was first sung at the author’s church of Emmanuel, Tolworth, Surrey, and is published here for the first time. The tune is JESUS, LAMB OF GOD.
