River, wash over me,
cleanse me and make me new;
bathe me, refresh me and fill me anew-
river, wash over me.

2. Spirit, watch over me,
lead me to Jesus’ feet;
cause me to worship and fill me anew-
Spirit, watch over me.

3. Jesus, rule over me,
reign over all my heart;
teach me to praise you and fill me anew-
Jesus, rule over me.

The story behind the hymn

Dougie Brown’s simple and personal 3-stz prayer was published in The New Redemption Hymnal in 1986. It is headed with John 13:8 (AV), ‘If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me’. His own tune RIVER[,] WASH OVER ME appears there in the key of E flat; David Peacock’s arrangement in F, as used here, is found in MP (1987). Let’s Praise (1988) adds references to 2 Kings 5:14, Ephesians 3:17, and Colossians 3:15.
