Sing out an Easter song
- 5015
Sing out an easter song,
tell everyone that the Lord has risen,
sing out a joyful song,
tell everybody that he’s alive!
1. Jesus Christ, Son of God,
gave his life upon a cross,
but the power of death was not
enough to hold him down.
Sing out an Easter song…
2. Taken down from public view,
he was placed inside a tomb,
but the power of love broke through
and raised him back to life.
Sing out an Easter song…
3 He returned to see his friends,
showed himself alive again.
What a day it must have been
to have him back again!
Sing out an Easter song…

The story behind the hymn
Written in 1991, this song was part of a collection for use throughout the school year (‘Songs For Every Season’). The song was written as an easy-to-sing clear Biblical narrative, that could introduce unchurched children to the sequence of Easter events – Crucifixion, Burial and Resurrection. Whilst the verses were used to tell the story, the chorus serves as a simple celebratory declaration. Jesus Christ is clearly presented as the Son of God, who defeated Death itself on a cross.
A look at the author
Johnson, Mark and Helen
When Mark and Helen were married in 1988, they both had a keen interest in music. Helen had completed a degree course in English at Leicester University, followed by a PGCE at Froebel College, Roehampton University. She worked as a primary school teacher for a number of years specialising both in English and Music. Mark and Helen left their jobs to set up ‘Out Of The Ark Music’ in the 1990’s, becoming both its directors and principle songwriters. ‘Out Of The Ark’ is unique in its ability to make their Christian songs available in mainstream education. The richness, diversity and relevance of their songs is proving to be popular in over two-thirds of Primary Schools in the UK. Their songs have also featured on Radio and TV, such as CBBies and Songs Of Praise. They have also written for charities such as Comic Relief, Wateraid and the Girl Guides. Mark and Helen have three children and live in Surrey.
