Who may ascend the hill of the Lord
and who may stand in his holy place?
Only the one whose hands are clean,
whose heart is made clean by the Saviour’s grace.
Lord, grant me clean hands and a pure heart,
clean hands that can work for you.
I long for clean hands and a pure heart,
a heart that’s devoted to giving the best for you.

Tune

The story behind the hymn

The opening question and answer from Psalm 24:3–4 form the basis of Geoff Baker’s song from 1995. He turns the challenge of the original into a prayer, and a declaration of longing, for this biblical holiness. His tune WHO MAY ASCEND THE HILL OF THE LORD was composed with and for the words, conveying the feeling of ‘ascent’ in its opening bars. This is the first main hymnal to publish it. It must be distinguished from similar partparaphrases, and the context in Scripture should also be remembered; cf 24A, 24B.
